Current: Ms Kota-Fredericks is the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements; a position she was first appointed to on 11 May 2009 and was reappointed on 26 May 2014. She has been a Member of Parliament since 1994.

Membership:
  Ms Kota-Fredericks was executive mayor of Ikwezi Community Centre from 1974 to 1978; a member of Young Christian Workers from 1977 to 1979; a member of the UWC Commerce Society and a founder member of United Women's Organisation and the organisation's secretary in 1983. In 1985, she was detained and later went into exile, first to Lesotho and then to Zambia , Angola, the Soviet Union, Cuba and Zimbabwe. Ms Kota-Fredericks e served as publicity secretary for the United Democratic Front from 1983 to 1993, and as a member of the Codesa negotiations. She also served on the Gender Advisory Committee from 1992 to 1993. Ms Kota-Fredericks was Coordinator of the ANC Western Cape Elections in 1993, and she has served as a member of the Portfolio Committee on Defence, as well as Sports and Recreation, Environmental Affairs and Tourism. She was also a member of the Internal Arrangements Subcommittee; a member of the Ad-hoc Committee on the Selection of Gender Commissioners and of the Formation of the Youth Commission Legislation. Ms Kota-Fredericks was a member of the Rules Committee and Women's Caucus. In 1987, she became a member of the Diplomatic Mission to Cuba, a position she held until 1991. Ms Kota-Fredericks has served as chairperson of the Housing Portfolio Committee; a member of Provincial Executive Committee of African National Congress (ANC) since 1992; chairperson of the provincial ANC Women's League (ANCWL) since 2003, and as a member of the Western Cape Steering Committee of the Progressive Women's Movement.
