Membership:
  Dr Phaahla has served as director-general in the Department of Sport and Recreation; he was involved in organising the 2010 FIFA World Cup until 10 May 2009; and served as Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land from May 2009 to October 2010. In 2000, Dr Phaahla served as chief executive officer of the South African Sports Commission. He was a member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 1991 to 2000, during which time he served as MEC for Art, Sport and Culture and as MEC for Health and Welfare respectively. Between 1984 and 1990, Dr Phaahla held various positionsHe was medical superintendent and senior medical superintendent at St Ritas Hospital in the Nebo District of Limpopo; senior medical officer and superintendant at Mapulaneng Hospital in Bushbuckridge, Limpopo; director of medical services of the Department of Health in Lebowa; private practitioner in Soweto; medical officer at the Prince Mshiyeni Hospital Umlazi; and intern at the Edendale Hospital Pietermaritzburg. Dr Phaahla was a board member of the National Health Laboratory Services; the Limpopo Development Corporation; the National Lottery Sports Agency; Netcare Health Lifestyles Trust; and the Council of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Dr Phaahla was the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture from November 2010 until May 2014.
Education: Dr Phaahla holds a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (previously University of Natal); a Diploma in Health Service Management from the University of Haifa Institute of Science, Israel obtained in 1992; and a Certificate of General Management, Marketing and Finance.
