Parliamentary Career
Current: Mr Mthembu serves as the Chief Whip of the Majority Party African National Congress(ANC)in the National Assembly at the National Assembly (Parliament)since 22 March 2016.His ANC Constituency Office (803): Moses Mabhida Regional Office (Constituency Office) since 10 May 2014
Past: Mr Mthembu was the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs (National Assembly Committees) from June 2014 until 21st March 2016. Mr Mthembu led the Swapo support group in 300 taxis to the first democratic elections in 1988 in Namibia. He was the deputy regional secretary of the United Democratic Front from 1988 to 1990, he went on to become the media officer for the SA Council of Churches. He is a Roman Catholic and a Methodist. From 1990 to 1994 Mthembu was the ANC spokesman in the Eastern Transvaal (Mpumalanga) region and from 1995 to 1997 the ANC national spokesman. He is the former National Spokesperson for the ruling party, until the 26th May 2014. He was speaker of the Mpumalanga Legislature from May 2006. In addition Mthembu was MEC in Mpumalanga for public roads and transport from 1997 to 1999.

Education: Mr Mthembu was a student leader at Elukhanyisweni Secondary School in Witbank. He also went to the University of Fort Hare.
