Current: Mr David Mbangiseni Mahlobo is the Minister of Energy of the Republic of South Africa; a position he was appointed to on 17 October 2017.
Political Career:
Membership:
  Prior to his appointment as minister, Mr Mahlobo was head of the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs. He served as a member of the South African Students Congress (SASCO) from 1994 to 2000 and filled a number of positions at the University of Zululand during his student days, including the Desmond Tutu Trust Committee, the Auditor-General's steering committee and the finance committee, and was chairperson of the audit committee. From 2000 to 2001, Mr Mahlobo also served as the director of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry's transformation committee. He was appointed to the ANC's national executive committee in 2012. Mr Mahlobo played an important role in the departmental task team on the transformation and restructuring of the public service. Mr Mahlobo provided oversight and managed several projects, including the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry's institutional re-alignment; a socio-economic development framework for the National Water Resource Infrastructure Branch, the National Task Team on War on Poverty, transformation of water management institutions, the Ministerial Transformation Council, departmental Task Team on the Transformation and Restructuring of the Public Service.
Education: Mr Mahlobo hold a BSc degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry obtained in 1998. He also holds a BSc Honours degree in Biochemistry obtained in 1999 from the University of Zululand.
