Motion without Notice by Honourable Dumisani Dennis Gamede on presidential elections in Nigeria

29 April 2011

Chairperson, I move without notice:

That the Council-

Notes that one of Africa`s most populous nation, Nigeria, held its presidential elections on Saturday, 16 April 2011;

Further notes that despite widespread security concerns after bombs hit a vote-counting centre and a polling station during last weekend`s legislative elections, voting in the oil-rich country was largely peaceful and credible, and incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan was declared the winner in a landmark vote that exposed regional tensions and led to deadly rioting in the mainly Muslim north;

Takes this opportunity to congratulate the people of Nigeria and all political parties involved in the election for their dignified conduct and demonstrating to the people of the world that Africa has great possibilities and that we value and hold in high regard the principles of democracy; and

Congratulates incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan on his win and for being the incumbent and first president from the southern oil-producing Niger Delta region.
