Condolence motion on death of Shirish Nanabhai

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

(1) notes with sadness the death of an Indian-origin South African freedom fighter and former MK, Shirish Nanabhai on Friday, April 1 at No 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria;

(2) further notes that the 78- year old Nanabhai joined Umkhonto weSizwe in 1962 and was later arrested for sabotage and sentenced to ten years in prison, spending most of his imprisonment on Robben Island;

(3) acknowledges that upon his release from prison in 1973 he was placed under house arrest in Fordsburg until 1978;

(4) understands that Shirish Nanabhai was a fine, dignified, humble and committed servant of the ANC and of our democracy;

(5) further understands that Nanabhai who was one of the first South Africans to volunteer for the ANC armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe to fight against apartheid, was honoured with the National Order of Mendi for Bravery in 2014 by President Jacob Zuma;

(6) believes that his values will continue to serve and inspire the young and old people of South Africa; and

(7) conveys condolences to the family and friends of Cde Shirish Nanabhai.
