Passing of ANC Caucus Chief Political advisor and Chief of Staff, Cde Tumisang Bojabotsheha

02 May 2017

It is with the deepest sadness that the Office of the ANC Chief Whip in Parliament has learnt of the passing on of one of our ANC Parliamentary Caucus Support Staff members Cde Tumisang Bojabotsheha. Comrade Tumisang left us on Sunday 30 April after a short illness at the age of 45.

Comrade Tumisang joined the ANC Caucus in 2006 as a researcher in the Research and Development Unit. In 2009 he was deployed by the ANC as part of the Rapid Response Team (RTT) to the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro to organize for the ANC for the 2009 general elections. He was responsible for specific areas under the RTT and served with distinction with the ANC recording major victories across the Metro as part of the National & Provincial elections. He was to be called upon later to provide support to the Interim Nelson Mandela Bay ANC Regional Structure leading up to the Local Government Elections in 2016.

In 2010 he was promoted to Senior Researcher in the ANC Parliamentary Caucus, a post he held until he became Policy Advisor to the ANC Chief Whip and in 2016 Chief Political Advisor to the Chief Whip. In 2017 he was given the additional responsibility of Chief of Staff both positions he held at the time of his passing.

A brilliant intellectual mind who has contributed exceptionally to the ANC Parliamentary Caucus over the past 11 years, whose writings and analysis have had a profound impact on documents that today guide the Caucus and whose legal interpretation of case law has helped Caucus to deal with legal interpretation of matters on numerous occasions.

At the time of his passing, Comrade Tumisang was reading for a two year legal practice course with the University of South Africa (UNISA). He also holds a LLB from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) which he obtained with distinction.

Comrade Tumisang was also a leader in his own right. He served on the Provincial Executive Committee of the South African Communist Party in the Western Cape from 2010 and in 2013 was elected 1st Deputy Provincial Secretary, a position he held until his passing. He was also the ANC Branch Chairperson in his ward until additional responsibilities in the Parliamentary Caucus caused him to stand down.

His loss will be felt not only within the ANC Caucus but through the broader structures of the ANC, the SACP, the alliance and mass democratic movement.

A selfless and dedicated cadre of the movement who always put the interest of the people first. We celebrate his contribution to the improvement of human life and human solidarity. As we dip our revolutionary flag in honour of Comrade Tumisang, let us appreciate that he has played his part.

As for those left behind, we must lift up the spear and continue to fight for the liberation of our people from the bondages of social and economic exploitation wherever it is to be found.

On behalf of the ANC Caucus, we send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. A delegation of the Office of the ANC Chief Whip will be visiting the family of Cde Tumisang later today to pay our respects in their time of need.
