ANC condemns hijacking of Cde Makwetla and threats to Cde Khoza

23 May 2017

The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament condemns in the strongest terms the hijacking of ANC MP and Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services comrade Thabang Makwetla.

The incident took place on Sunday (21 May 2017) at about 19:30pm outside Life Riverfield Lodge Clinic in Randburg. Comrade Makwetla was on his way to visiting ANC stalwart Cde Wally Serote at the hospital.

As the ANC in Parliament we express our deepest solace to comrade Makwetla following this horrible incident. We are however comforted by the fact that he returned unharmed. Comrade Makwetla has confirmed that he is physically unharmed and remains in high spirit. He reported back to work this morning.

We appeal to members of the public who may have information on the incident to report the matter to the police. Crime fighting remains one of the ANC's key priority areas and we are confident of the efforts by Police Minister comrade Fikile Mbalula and his collective in addressing this scourge.

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip has received a letter from ANC MP Dr Makhosi Khoza detailing threats she has received in the recent past. We are shocked and outraged by these threats particularly as they are allegedly coming from sections of the ANC. It is completely unacceptable that an ANC MP would be made to feel unsafe as a result of their work as a member of parliament.

The ANC Chief Whip has written to the Speaker of Parliament and the Secretary General of the ANC for their urgent attention and advice on how all of us should work together in securing the safety of comrade Khoza and those close to her.

The ANC Chief Whip has also advised comrade Khoza that all intimidation activities and death threats directed at her should be reported to the police.

We will do everything possible and within our powers to ensure the safety of comrade Khoza and any other ANC MP who are being intimidated for carrying out their functions as members of parliament.
