Parliament Passes Border Management Authority Bill

08 June 2017

The African National Congress in Parliament is pleased with the passing of the Border Management Authority (BMA) Bill by the National Assembly today.

This Bill seeks to establish a Border Management Authority that will secure cross-border travel, trade facilitation and national security imperatives, within the context of South Africa's regional, African and international obligations. The BMA is expected to facilitate the legitimate flow of humans and goods in an efficient manner while mitigating against illegal activities across our borders.

The BMA will play an important role in supporting the creation of an inclusive and growing economy at the frontline of our country's borders by facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods in line with our socio-economic objectives.

As the ANC, we appreciate the urgent need for this entity to be established to coordinate and regulate activities at our borders. The issue of border control has for some time now been a call made by our people. Today the ANC in Parliament has heeded the call of our people and taken this bold step towards border control.

As a Section 75 Bill, the BMA Bill will be submitted to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for concurrence.
