Five Nabbed With Abalone and Equipment worth R3.5 Million

TM Tongwane

The African National Congress is concerned by the high rate of Abalone smuggling in the country, especially in the Western Cape. The recent arrest of five people in possession of abalone and processing equipment worth about R3.5 million rand in Mfuleni, Cape Town on Saturday 11th November 2017 is not a separate incident. In the past we have seen cases of this nature and despite the arrests, this problem persists.

It is reported that in the early hours of that Saturday morning, members of the provincial tactical response team (TRT) acted on information about an alleged abalone processing facility at a house in Mfuleni and acted swiftly. Upon their arrival at the address in Pelican Walk, Sunbird Park, they found abalone with an estimated street value of R3.5 million, which included the equipment used by the suspects. The African National Congress commends the South African Police for acting swiftly and arresting the suspects. We hope the suspects will be punished to the letter of the law.

I thank you
