Motion on Patrice Motsepe Receiving Sunday Times Lifetime Achiever Award

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

1) notes that the South African mining magnate and philanthropist, Patrice Motsepe received the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Lifetime Achiever Award, a decision made by two independent panellists;
2) understands that the awards, said to be the most anticipated event of the year for South African businesses, took place in Johannesburg on 8 November 2017;
3) remembers that Motsepe is the founder and executive chairperson of African Rainbow Minerals, non-executive chairperson of Harmony Gold, and deputy chairperson of Sanlam;
4) recalls that he has managed to grow a significant mining business through African Rainbow Minerals and, like titans before, is amid a diversification drive that has seen him moving into banking;
5) recorgnising that he became the first black partner in one of the "Big Five Law Firms", Bowman Gilfillan in 1994;
6) recalls that he joined philanthropic organisation in 2013, The Giving Pledge, whereby he committed to donating half of his fortune toward charitable causes;
7) understands he is one of the few black businessmen that have managed to emerged from more than 20 years of the new South Africa including Richard Maponya, Nthato Motlana and Sam Motsuenyane; and
8) congratulates Dr Motsepe on the well-deserved award.
