Motion Congratulating Seitebatso Pearl Block for Winning United Nations Military Gender Advocate of The Year Award

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

1) congratulates Seitebatso Pearl Block on scooping the United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award on Wednesday, 15 November 2017, at the UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial Conference held in Vancouver, Canada.;
2) notes that the award bestowed on Ms Block recognises the dedication and efforts of an individual peacekeeper in promoting the principles within the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325;
3) further notes that the conference is the largest gathering of Defence ministers dedicated to UN Peacekeeping;
4) recalls that Ms Block has been an officer since 2007, and has been deployed twice to the Democratic Republic of Congo under the leadership of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo;
5) further recalls that her first deployment was in 2010 as an Information Operations Officer, and in 2016 as a Force Intervention Brigade Planner;
6) understands that she was instrumental in the implementation of a project aimed at reaching out and disseminating information to women's organisations in far-flung areas of the DRC;
7) salutes Major Block for her hard work and dedication while serving in the DRC, as well as her commitment to the protection of civilians, especially women and children; and
8) hails her for being a peace and goodwill ambassador, and wishes her much success in her future endeavours.
