Motion on Iran plain crash killing 66 persons on board

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

1) notes with sadness the death of 66 people in Iran following crash of a commercial aircraft on Sunday 18 February 2018 killing all on the flight, including one child, and six crew members;
2) understands that the ATR-72, a twin-engine turboprop used for short-distance regional flying, went down near the remote mountain town of Semirom, some 620 kilometres south of the capital, Tehran;
3) further understands that the plane was flying from Tehran to the southern Iranian city of Yasuj, some 780 kilometres south of the Iranian capital;
4) recalls that under decades of international sanctions, Iran`s commercial passenger aircraft fleet has aged, with air accidents occurring regularly in recent years;
5) remembers that following the 2015 landmark nuclear deal with world powers, Iran signed deals with both Airbus and Boeing to buy scores of passenger planes;
6) believes that due to foggy condition, rescue helicopters couldn`t reach the crash site in the Zagros Mountains; and
7) conveys condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran and all families of the deceased.
