Motion on Enterprise polony identified as source of Listeria outbreak

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

1) acknowledges the announcement by the Minister of Health, on Sunday 4 March 2018 that polony and products from the Enterprise factory in Polokwane‚ Limpopo‚ are the source of the world`s largest outbreak of listeria;
2) notes that more than 16 environmental samples from the Enterprise Polokwane factory tested positive for the listeriosis monocytogenes strain ST 6;
3) further notes that the results from the factory were confirmed at midnight on Saturday 3 March 2018 at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases as being the strain to blame for the outbreak that killed 27% of patients in South Africa;
4) understands that the National Consumer Commission has issued the manufacturer involved with food recall notices;
5) further understands that listeriosis affects mostly the elderly‚ those with compromised immune systems such as people with Aids and diabetics and new born babies;
6) recorgnises that it has claimed more than 170 lives since January 2017;
7) acknowledges the speedy response of affected businesses in removing contaminated food from the shelves;
8) calls on the public to heed the call by the Minister to avoid eating ready to eat meat products, even from companies that are not affected by the recall; and
9) commends the Minister and his team for getting to the bottom of this problem.
