Motion on 2019 Election Registration weekend

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

1) notes that the weekend of 10 and 11 March 2018 has been confirmed by the IEC as voter registration weekend in preparation for 2019 general elections which are expected to take place between May and August next year;
2) understands that the IEC will open all 22 612 voting stations around the country between 8am and 5pm to assist new voters to register;
3) believes this is an opportunity to also allow registered voters who may have relocated to re-register in their correct voting districts with their new details;
4) acknowledges that registered voters can check where they are registered by sending an SMS with their ID number to 32810;
5) recalls that according to the IEC this registration weekend is a milestone towards the culmination of a two-year project to obtain addresses for all registered voters;
6) acknowledges the ruling of the Constitutional Court in 2016 which gave the Electoral Commission until June 2018 to update the voters' roll with all available addresses;
7) calls on all voters to bring along their bar-coded ID book, smart card ID or temporary ID certificate, including future youth voters who they may vote only after they have turned 18 years old; and
8) commends the IEC on the state of readiness for the registration week-end.
