Motion on congratulating Caster Sememya for breaking the 1000m South African Record

The African National Congress moves without notice: That the House

1) congratulates Caster Semenya for making a new South African record in the women's 1,000m in a time of two minutes 35.43 seconds at the Athletic Grand Prix meeting held at Tuks Stadium in Pretoria on Thursday, 8 March 2018;
2) notes that Caster broke the South African 1000m record set by Llze Wicksell 35 years ago by almost two seconds;
3) also notes that Caster was followed by the Ugandans, Halimah Nakaayi who took the second position in 2:37.55 and Winnie Nanyondo on third position in 2:37.98;
4) believes that this achievement sets her as a lodestar that young female athletes can look up to for inspiration and motivation;
5) further believes that South Africans are fully behind her achievements;
6) understands that Caster is going to be part of the South African athletic team that will compete in the 2818 Commonwealth games from 4 until 15 April 2018 at the Gold Coast in Australia;
7) have confidence that Caster will also fly the South African flag high in the Common wealth games; and
8) wishes her more success in her future endeavours.
