ANC Commends the Hawks on arrests of Sun City prison escape

20 April 2018

The ANC Study Group on Justice and Correctional Services applauds the work done by the Hawks in arresting two prison warders for their alleged involvement in the escape of 16 prisoners from the Johannesburg Correctional Centre last week.

The 16 awaiting-trial prisoners escaped through a pipe shaft and broke through a wall in the Medium B section at the prison, also known as Sun City, on 9 April 2018. Four of the escapees have been rearrested while two were shot and killed in a shootout with the police in KwaZulu-Natal. The police are still searching for the remaining 10 escapees.

We commend the good working relations between the police and correctional services officials which led to this crucial arrest. Their hard work and passion of serving with pride to protect the citizens of this country has indeed produced fruitful and meaningful results.

Although we have seen a reduction in prison escapes over the years, this most recent incident shows that there are still loopholes in our correctional service system which allows for fraud and criminality.

Whilst the arrest of the two correctional service officials is good progress, we urge investigating officers to leave no stone unturned to ensure that the 10 remaining escapees and others who may aided them in their escape face the full might of the law.

Issued by the Whip of the ANC Study Group on Justice and Correctional Services, Comrade Madipoane Mothapo.
