Very Fruitful ANC-Labour Party Bilateral

29 May 2018

The African National Congress in Parliament had very fruitful engagements with representatives of the Labour Party of the United Kingdom, Honourable Emily Thornberry and Honourable Liz McInnes, in Parliament today.

Our comrades of the Labour Party particularly appreciated the positive mood in the country heralded by the outcomes of the 54th National Conference of the ANC. The ANC's relationship with the Labour Party dates back to the dark days of Apartheid where our anti-Apartheid machinery was supported by the UK as governed by the Labour Party.

Today's engagements renewed our friendship with the aim of carrying it forward through the possibility of Caucus-to-Caucus exchange programmes. Among issues of common interest discussed, both parties focused on the upcoming elections in our respective countries and pledged support for one another.

The ANC also successfully canvassed support for South Africa's candidacy on the United Nations Security Council of which they assured us their full support.

Today's meeting was a crucial step towards rekindling our relations with one of our most progressive sister-parties.

Issued by the Office of the ANC Chief Whip, Honourable Jackson Mthembu.
