ANC Caucus mourns sad passing of comrade Edna Molewa

22 September 2018

The ANC Parliamentary Caucus joins South Africans in mourning the sad passing of ANC Member of Parliament and Minister of Environmental Affairs, comrade Edna Molewa. Comrade Molewa passed away earlier today after spending a short time in Hospital.

She was one of the founder ANC MPs who formed part of our first democratic Parliament and the first woman Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry in 1994.

She was a remarkable leader who served the people of South Africa in various roles, including as Premier of the North West Province. She returned to Parliament in 2009 and was appointed Minister of Environmental Affairs, a role she served with distinction until her passing. As a champion of programmes that mitigate the negative impact of climate change, and other environmental matters, her work in this area will be remembered as part of the legacy she leaves behind.

She was also a champion of women's struggles, having fought for the emancipation of women her entire life. Comrade Molewa's immense contribution to the struggle for the liberation of our country, her diligent service in government and selfless commitment to her movement, the ANC & its broader alliance partners, will forever be imprinted in our hearts.

Her passing, which comes days after we lost another member of our ANC Parliamentary Caucus, comrade Nokhaya Mnisi, has left our Caucus poorer. Their valuable contribution in Caucus and in Parliament will be greatly missed.

We extend our deepest condolences to comrade Molewa's family, in particular her children and grandchildren, her friends, comrades and colleagues.

May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

Issued by the Office of the ANC Chief Whip, comrade Jackson Mthembu.
