National Assembly unanimously passes Hydrographic Bill

30 October 2018

The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament is pleased with the passing of the Hydrographic Bill in the National Assembly (NA) today. The Hydrographic Bill was introduced by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans in May 2018, to make provision for the creation of the Hydrographic Office within the South African Navy.

This Bill will provide for the safe navigation of ships and boats in South African waters and for the development a regulatory system that will enable South Africa to benefit economically, from its oceans and inland waters.

Furthermore, the creation of the Hydrographic Office will establish governance infrastructure that will enable South Africa to get the most out of its ocean trade routes. It will also improve the safety of sailors by providing navigational warnings in line with international best practice.

The ANC applauds the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans for the sterling work they have done to ensure that South Africa is on par with international best practice by finalising this Bill within such a short pace of time. The Bill will be sent to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) for concurrence.

Issued by the Office of the ANC Chief Whip, comrade Jackson Mthembu.
