ANC supports Parliament's decision to oppose interdict against Constitutional Review Committee (CRC)

21 November 2018

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip has noted the interdict from AfriForum aiming to suspend the decision of the Joint Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) to adopt the report on the review of Section 25 of the Constitution, taken on 15 November 2018.

AfriForum is so hell-bent on delaying and derailing Parliament from satisfying the quest of our people to get their land back, they are also seeking an order to restrain the CRC from submitting the report to the National Assembly (NA) and National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

The ANC fully supports Parliament's decision to appoint senior counsel to challenge this interdict. We are certain that this court application will be defeated, in the same way their right-wing campaign which sought to prevent the adoption of the CRC report recommending a constitutional amendment was defeated in the committee through this parliamentary process.

We reiterate our full confidence in the process which has led to the adoption of the CRC report in agreeing to the amendment Section 25 of the Constitution, for the expropriation of land without compensation. From where we are seated, since the very initial mandate given to the committee by both houses of Parliament, this entire process has been fair, transparent and democratic.

Issued by the Office of the ANC Chief Whip, comrade Jackson Mthembu.
