ANC calls for speedy implementation of anti-gang unit

27 November 2018

The ANC Study Group on Police is concerned about the apparent mis-conceptionalisation of the Anti-Gang Unit by Top Police Management. The Police Commissioner accompanied by Senior Police Management appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Police today to brief the committee on, among other, their progress on establishing a fully-fledged the Anti-Gang Unit.

The briefing demonstrated a clear conceptual departure from what the President launched on the 2 November 2018, at Downsberg Sports Field, Hanover Park, in Cape Town.

The ANC emphatically expressed its support for this unit as a means to combat drugs and gangs in our communities.

The reported successes of the Anti-Gang Unit since the launch on 2 November 2018, confirm that it is only through a permanent body that we will be able to root out gangsterism.

The Commissioner and his top management were therefore informed that the committee supports a fully-fledged Anti-Gang Unit as directed by the President, and that is therefore what must be implemented.

Issued by comrade Leonard Ramatlakane on behalf of the ANC Study Group on Police.
