ANC communications Study Group unimpressed with SABC pushing ahead with Section 189

28 November 2018

The ANC Study Group on Communications is very worried about the absence of a solution to circumvent job losses at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). On November 13, Parliament instructed the SABC board to conduct a skills audit and develop a restructuring plan with the aim of avoiding retrenchments at the SABC.

Yesterday, 27 November 2018, the Board appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Communications again to report on, among other, progress on preventing the enactment of Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act to retrench employees.

The presentation delivered by the board to Parliament demonstrated that they had not bothered to come up with a solution to circumvent job losses. The Committee was fed a truncated and incoherent presentation, which did not address issues raised in the last meeting with the board.

The ANC Study Group on Communication is of the view that a jobs moratorium must be put in place at the SABC. It is also implausible that when a state-owned enterprise which is in such a difficult financial position such as the SABC, can afford to make any new high level appointments. We are also of the view that the recapitalisation of the public broadcaster is very important in order to keep the lights on and to save thousands of jobs at the SABC.

Issued by the Whip of the ANC Study Group on Communications Whip, comrade Mziwamadoda Kalako.
